Find A Grave Database: 7.2 Million New Cemetery Records Added
The Major Collection for this week is an update to the WorldVitalRecords.com Find A Grave index. Find A Grave became a partner to WorldVitalRecords.com (FamilyLink.com) in August 2007. This update contains 7,191,301 new names, bringing the index total to 23,688,510 names. This index is free to search on WorldVitalRecords.com, with search results linking to the Find A Grave website.
Find A Grave offers listings of cemeteries and graves from all around the world. American cemeteries are organized by state and county, and many cemetery records contain photographs of the individual markers or the entire cemeteries. The records contain some or all of the following data fields: dates and places of birth and death, biographical information, cemetery and plot information, photographs, and contributor information.
Thousands of contributors submit new listings, updates, corrections, photographs and virtual flowers every hour. There have been more than 200,000 contributors to the site. Find A Grave is operated by its founder, Jim Tipton.
Jim created Find A Grave in 1995 because he could not find an existing site that catered to his hobby of visiting the graves of famous people. He found that there were thousands of people around the world who share this interest. What began as a hobby became a livelihood and a passion.
Find A Grave also tracks searches of famous people. Because of the recent death of comedian and actor Bernie Mac, his name is the top search right now on Find A Grave. The second most popular search is Elvis Presley.
Find A Grave also lists the most recently added records, has a forum and includes a necrology, which is a listing of people who died during a specific time period. Find A Grave necrologies allows a user to browse the names and faces of the 75 most famous people who have died during a selected year, all the way back to 1900.
