Genealogy in 15 Minutes A Day: Training the Next Generation In preparation for this, make sure that the kids or grandkids are around. Day 1: Show a pedigree chart. It has an interesting visual format and will probably spark interest quicker than family group sheets. Day 2: Show a variety of pedigree group charts and tell the kids/grandkids stories about the people on the charts. Day 3: Show pictures to go with these people. They may look “funny” to the kids, but having something new and different (or old, but still different) to look at will help spark interest. Pictures say more words in less time than histories. Day 4: Show family artifacts. Experiencing history makes more of an impression than reading about it. Day 5: Show films pertaining to the time periods of the people in the pictures depending upon the age of the kids in question: How the West Was Won, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Brigadoon, Roots, Life is Beautiful, 1776, Hello, Dolly!, Anne of Green Gables, Gone With The Wind, The Sound of Music, Little Women, Nicholas Nickleby, Oliver!, Annie, Pride and Prejudice, The Parent Trap (Haley Mills version), George Washington (mini series), North and South, Anna and the King, Oklahoma!, McLintock!, South Pacific, etc. Day 6: Have the kids look up information online for relatives at www.worldvitalrecords.com, especially through Ellis Island.org, etc. Day 7: Serve snacks that are older family recipes or meals and have the kids help out with kitchen work or other cultural activities.
