Wonderbase of the Week: Sizeable Portion Of U.S. Census 1790-1920 Now Online At WorldVitalRecords.com
Genealogy papers and old watch

World Vital Records, Inc. is pleased to announced the inclusion of a sizeable portion of the U.S. census 1790-1920 in its collection. This collection includes more than 800,000 browseable images and 32 million names from various counties from all the United States, except Alaska. It also includes the 1930 census for Puerto Rico.

Because of the sheer size of the 1790-1920 census, the images will be launched throughout the week as follows:

  • Monday - 1790-1840
  • Tuesday - 1850-1870
  • Wednesday - 1880-1910
  • Thursday - 1920
  • Friday - 1930 (Puerto Rico only)
The United State Census is often regarded as the most valuable resources in researching American ancestors. The census can help researchers construct family groups, track migration patterns, understand a family's living conditions, and identify necessary bits of information, such as ages and birthplaces.

Although the images are currently browsable, they are not yet indexed, with the exception of the 1790 Census, which is included as a separate database. In the future World Vital Records hopes to develop a comprehensive index to facilitate easier, faster searches. Meanwhile, the images are up and available free to access for the next 10 days.

Genealogical Tip: Finding the Meaning of Abbreviations in Indexes
by Amanda Forson, WorldVitalRecords.com

When looking up information in a recently uploaded database, List of the Revolutionary Soldiers of Virginia: Special Report of the Department of Archives and History for 1911, Part 1, a user found possible entries for her relatives along with the following abbreviations:

The abbreviations, H.D. were unknown to her and to me. We found them in the guide to abbreviations located near the front of the book. In most index books, if there are abbreviations listed and they are not explained in footnotes on the page or endnotes at the end of the book of the end of the chapter, look in the introduction to the book or the back if the book is not organized alphabetically and has a surname index at the back.
