The Ashley Genealogy: A History of the Descendants of Robert Ashley of Springfield, Massachusetts
Ashley is becoming a not uncommon name in the United States. Besides the descendants of the Ashleys who settled here before the year 1700, many others have arrived since from England, while numbers have crossed over from Canada, some of the latter having merely assumed the name. To set forth the difficulties encountered in the compilation of this Genealogy, would give no new facts to the genealogist or interest others, so a detailed account of them and the various sources of information made use of is unnecessary. The compiler will say, however, that all statement contained in this Genealogy are the result of personal examination of public records or are based on correspondence with members of the family. The names and dates in the family registers are printed exactly as they appear on record or in the letters received, as the proof sheets were compared with the compiler's original notes and the aforesaid letters. -- From the Preface.
