A Collection of Upwards of Thirty Thousand Names of German, Swiss, Dutch, French and Other Immigrants in Pennsylvania, 1727 - 1776
Historical Context: Compiled by Professor I. Daniel Rupp, this database is a volume of early colonists to Philadelphia with the names of the ships that they came on along with date and when they arrived in Philadelphia. These are arranged chronologically with notes and an appendix of more than one thousand German and French who came into New York prior to 1712. Written in English and German, this volume includes notes as written to the Editor who originally published the volume in the Monthly Serial in 1856.
Questions Asked: Why This collection is Valuable: "As the first attempt to bring together the thousands of persons who came to Pennsylvania, this work stands today as a cornerstone in laying the foundation of Pennsylvania genealogy." (GPC, 1965) Further included within this edition are an eighty-nine page name index, and an index of all the ships' names within the volume.
Next Steps: After finding a name in this index, the original should be sought out, and following that, it should be less difficult to trace the ancestors of the person in question to their ancestral land in Germany, Switzerland, France, etc. Due to wars and other destruction, there is no guarantee that the original records from those areas survived, but not checking for them is worse than discovering their absence via destruction. For those that still survive, gold awaits.
