Influence of the War of 1812 upon the Settlement of the Canadian West.
Influence of the War of 1812 upon the Settlement of the Canadian West.. This paper examines the influence the war of 1812 had in giving the inhabitants of those colonies of N. America which remained loyal to Britain, a group identity as Canadians. It discusses the influence this had on drawing the largely unexplored territories west of the great lakes into a coalition with the existing "eastern" colonies to form the Confederation and finally the Dominion of Canada. It also notes the effect of the western Selkirk settlements.
