Dear GenealogyWise Member,

Family history research is so much more than gathering names and dates. It's about developing an understanding of your ancestor's life by learning more about the place and time they lived in. Without acquiring this understanding you could be searching for information that either doesn't exist or is kept in an unfamiliar place.

This was reinforced to me recently when I had asked one of my husband's cousins to take some pictures of gravestones in the Puerto Rican cemetery near her home. When I asked for a picture of her great-grandparent's graves she let me know that they didn't exist. Being an island, land is at a premium in Puerto Rico so older gravesites are reused. There are no grave markers, older than about 50 years, for my husband's family.

This one source, that I would be accustomed to finding is not available in this locality. Knowing the locality and customs helps in knowing what information is available for your research.

Looking for more information about the locality you are researching? GenealogyWise has many locality groups that may help and members from all across the world that can assist you in learning more about a region. The Family History Library has research guides available to help you learn about resources for different localities. You can find them by going to http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/RG/frameset_rg.asp. There are genealogy books that focus on research in a certain locality. You can find these by searching your favorite online bookstore of by checking out a genealogy bookseller like Genealogical.com, http://www.genealogical.com/, or Heritage Books, http://www.heritagebooks.com/.

Enjoy your discoveries!

GenWise Tip

Internet Explorer

Having trouble accessing GenealogyWise? The internet browser you use can make all the difference. Mozilla's Firefox, http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ie.html, is the browser we recommend for GenealogyWise. You can download Firefox and still use Internet Explorer on other websites. Downloading Firefox is very easy and only takes a matter of minutes.

While it's true you may be able to use Internet Explorer without any problems, if you do have a problem at some point, it's most likely because of Internet Explorer.

GenWise member James Tanner blogs about indexes in his posting "Indexes are hearsay" at http://www.genealogywise.com/profiles/blogs/indexes-are-hearsay. This blog posting reminds researchers of the importance of not relying on indexes and spending the extra time to seek out primary documents.
