Our Plan for the 1940 Census

Images for the 1940 Census are now available on our site. The initial index of this census has started with some sections are already searchable. The majority of the index will be completed within 2012. Many states will be available here before anywhere else. We will provide both the images and index for FREE!

We will transcribe the 1940 census independently to ensure the highest level of quality and accuracy.

What is the 1940 Census?

As required by the US Constitution, the census is a federal mandate to count every resident of the United States of America every 10 years. Census data is released to the public 72 years after it was taken.

The 1940 U.S. Federal Census is the largest, most comprehensive, and most recent record set available.

What will this census tell me?

The 1940 Census was a count of all residents in the United States at that time, and the armed forces serving overseas, born before April 1, 1940.

The 1940 Census includes information on location, household, names, relations, sex, race, age, education, place of birth, and other facts unique to the 1940 Census:

  • Residence in 1935
  • Detailed income and occupation
  • Supplemental questions for 2 people on each form
